Surf Vagabonding Spirit

September 26, 2013

We’re driving through the U.S. right now, and our netbook containing our latest road trip photos needs some repair. Until then, we won’t be able to post any of the photos of the cool places we’ve been and seen. We haven’t gotten any good days of surf in, just a couple of small days in NYC. We’re itching to get in the water. In the meantime, I’ve been watching and re-watching Cyrus Sutton’s surf vagabonding video, Compassing, and dreaming of the next time we’ll be surfing head-high peelers…

Have you seen Stoked And Broke? It’s Cyrus’s full-length film about hitting the road for a surf trip on a budget — surf vagabonding in its purest form:

How did he film those low board shots! So still with the board that you’d think it was attached to it – but no obvious attachments.. Great techniques throughout!

I met Cyrus very briefly when he was touring Compassing earlier this year. It was superb seeing those shots on a bigger projection screen. Some of those shots, like the 3D GoPro array noserides and barrel shots were so good! My friend noted how Cyrus was such an unassuming looking guy, that unless you really knew him you’d never know he was brimming with so much artistic creativity and passion.

I stumbled upon your blog while searching up some info on West Sumbawa. Thanks for the entertaining and informative blog. Sounds like you had a trip for the ages. Good luck with your move to Santa Cruz. I love those waves.

It’s cool that you got to meet Cyrus! I haven’t had the pleasure, but I love his website, korduroy.tv, and all the awesome DIY stuff he posts. We’re planning on making our own surf racks for our bikes using his how-to video, with PVC plumbing pipes and insulating foam:

Also, one of the first things that made me discover Cyrus and inspired us to surf all over Chile was this beautiful video he made:

We’re already loving life in Santa Cruz! Glad you stopped by and said hi on our blog.
