who

We are two partners, surfers, lovers of life, doers and dreamers — pretty much in that order. We currently live in New York City and have both been here for years. We are deeply committed to each other and to each others’ happiness; luckily for both of us, surfing is what makes us both the happiest.

If you surf regularly, or don’t surf but have had a partner who’s a serious surfer, you probably understand how difficult a surfer/non-surfer relationship can be. The old cliche says that surfing isn’t a sport, it’s a lifestyle; it may be a cliche, but it’s true. When you’ve been bitten by the surfing bug, you will stop at nothing to get your wave fix. You’ll wake up at ungodly hours to get water time in before your 9-to-5 job, won’t make social commitments further than 2 or 3 days in advance (the number of days it takes to get a 90 percent swell prediction accuracy), and alter or cancel plans when an unpredicted swell comes through. It can be difficult for people who aren’t so enamored with the sport to understand why their partner would rather get out of bed at 4:30 a.m. in the cold and dark than snuggle until 10 and then go for brunch.

We met on the boardwalk at our home surf break. Five years on, we’re married and we wake up together at 4:30 a.m. in the cold and dark to go surfing. We’re incredibly lucky that we share this number one passion that trumps all other interests. We never argue about where we want to go on vacation. (Actually, that’s not 100% true – he likes cold water and is regular-foot, I like warm water and am goofy.)

I’m in my early 30’s and he’s in his mid-40’s. We’re both originally from Canada, and started surfing relatively late in life. For a long time now, we’ve had a dream to embark on an extended surfing adventure, and we’re finally making it come true!

    From Ted Lang; Dec 03.
WOW; what a trip so far. Hope the foot is all healed up by now.
Sitting in front of the fire keeping warm and thinking of all the winter chores I havent done yet. Still lots of green grass around but it cant last much longer. No snow of consequence yet but North of here and South in New Hampshire where we spent Thanksgiving, it snowed about 10 cms.
I went shopping on Black friday at Wal Mart but late in the day after they had been open since 10pm Thirsday. There is a movement afoot to have stores opening on Thursday and there was some negative reaction and rightly so. Give them a break for one day.

Look forward to your next blog. Is that the right term.?
    Regards
    Ted

Hey there – I’ve been fantasizing about travelling the world and surfing all over, and I came across your blog. It just clicked… I know you guys from the Vague a Guy in Lasalle, Montreal. We met a couple of times when you were up here visiting an ill family member in Ottawa, and you even gave me a ride back to the rafting company when I was hitching along Lasalle Boul.

Great blog, and very inspiring. I am so glad your adventures are working out and you are having a great time. Maybe our paths will cross again and we can buddy ride the Vague a Guy or Habitat waves which I have been surfing since May.

    God bless and great rides.

Hey Joshua! Cool to hear from you/run into you again. This is such a small world, I think especially when you surf. Glad you like our blog, hope you’re getting some good waves in Montreal and elsewhere. Buena onda!

    Hey

I am an amateur Anglo-German surf film maker based in Bristol UK. Would you have a look at my short documentary river surf ing in Munich, a slightly alternate version to the sport everyone is familiar with.

Would you be able to share this on your blog and or further it to anyone who might be interested please?

My video is non profit, and created for the love of surfing and film and it would be a huge privilege of you could!

    Thanks!
