We are two partners, surfers, lovers of life, doers and dreamers — pretty much in that order. We currently live in New York City and have both been here for years. We are deeply committed to each other and to each others’ happiness; luckily for both of us, surfing is what makes us both the happiest.

If you surf regularly, or don’t surf but have had a partner who’s a serious surfer, you probably understand how difficult a surfer/non-surfer relationship can be. The old cliche says that surfing isn’t a sport, it’s a lifestyle; it may be a cliche, but it’s true. When you’ve been bitten by the surfing bug, you will stop at nothing to get your wave fix. You’ll wake up at ungodly hours to get water time in before your 9-to-5 job, won’t make social commitments further than 2 or 3 days in advance (the number of days it takes to get a 90 percent swell prediction accuracy), and alter or cancel plans when an unpredicted swell comes through. It can be difficult for people who aren’t so enamored with the sport to understand why their partner would rather get out of bed at 4:30 a.m. in the cold and dark than snuggle until 10 and then go for brunch.

We met on the boardwalk at our home surf break. Five years on, we’re married and we wake up together at 4:30 a.m. in the cold and dark to go surfing. We’re incredibly lucky that we share this number one passion that trumps all other interests. We never argue about where we want to go on vacation. (Actually, that’s not 100% true – he likes cold water and is regular-foot, I like warm water and am goofy.)

I’m in my early 30’s and he’s in his mid-40’s. We’re both originally from Canada, and started surfing relatively late in life. For a long time now, we’ve had a dream to embark on an extended surfing adventure, and we’re finally making it come true!
